Ringing of the Ears
Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, is an affliction that millions of people suffer from. These individuals, who range in age from children to the elderly, hear sound in their ears even when there is no exterior noise. The noise can sound like hissing, bussing, roaring, clicking, and may even be a high pitched whining noise. Quiet environments can exacerbate the problem of tinnitus, making it very difficult for sufferers to sleep through the night.
We might ask what tinnitus really is. Is it a disease? An illness? The truth about it is that it is not a disease. Rather, it may be a symptom of diseases which are more serious than this ringing of ears. These include some blood circulation related medical conditions such as high blood pressure, anemia, atherosclerosis, and malformation of the capillaries. Allergies, ear infections, blocked ear canal, Meniere’s disease, age-related hearing loss, repeated exposure to loud noise, and the use of certain medications are also cause this unwanted sound.
Since tinnitus is technically not an actual disease, there’s currently no known cure for it. However, it shouldn’t concern us too much, since there are all kinds of treatments that can help mitigate the effects of tinnitus. Many of these treatments are natural and pragmatic, since they can be done on our own and without costing us too much money. First, don’t spend lots of time in environments where your ears are going to end up hearing lots of loud noises. If you absolutely have to (for work, etc.), make sure that you’re wearing earplugs, protective ear muffs, or some other hearing protection device. Second, some chemicals, such as salt, caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine, exacerbate the symptoms of tinnitus, so try cutting down on your consumption of those. You may need to change your habits and lifestyle a bit if you smoke three packs of cigarettes a day or always start your morning with four cups of coffee. Replace those chemicals with healthy vitamins and minerals such as choline, zinc, protein, and vitamins A, B, and E. Increasing daily exercise will also help combat tinnitus by increasing cardiovascular health, specifically, circulation.
If we find it hard to rely on the natural remedies alone, the use of devices such as maskers and hearing aids could assist us in making the distracting sound less noticeable. Homeopathic tinnitus remedies and herbal preparations are likely options, for they are free of side effects. Other alternatives include acupressure, acupuncture, aromatherapy, meditation, and reflexology. For stress management, we may try out counseling, tinnitus retraining therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy.
Of everything that has been mentioned, stress is the number one thing to avoid. Stress will make ringing in the ears worse. People who have this condition will find it easier to cope with if they have a good attitude.
